What a great book!
I was born and raised in the Soviet Union. Your book "First Capitalist in the Soviet Union" clearly captures the plight, poverty, and hopelessness of the Soviet people due to the dire system forced upon them by the Socialist/Communist party. The descriptions are accurate, reflecting both the beauty and the tragedy of that era. Thank you for this unforgettable book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and highly recommend your book to everyone.

This book offers more than a personal journey. It’s a rare inside look at entrepreneurship, international policy, and personal conviction. Steve’s experience in the Soviet Union is especially compelling. A powerful and well-written account of leadership in action. Recommended.

I've taught about the Cold War for thirty years, but Steve's book taught me things I never knew. The way he explains what was really happening inside the Soviet Union is just fascinating. My husband and I both read it. It's like getting the real story behind all those news reports we watched back then.

What stood out to me was the level of transparency. Steve doesn’t glorify the struggle. He shares it plainly, and that makes his success even more meaningful. It’s a strong example of ethical entrepreneurship. A true must-read.

This book completely changed how I think about innovation and taking risks. Steve's story shows that sometimes the most significant obstacles create the biggest opportunities. I found myself taking notes on his approach to problem-solving. It's given me confidence to tackle challenges in my own career that I was afraid of before.

I just completed Steve Puthuff’s book, “The First Capitalist in the Soviet Union” and was blown away not only with what he was able to accomplish but how he accomplished it working directly with President Gorbachev and his inner circle of Ministers. I believe that Steve had a calling and a firm belief that it was his “duty” to spread Capitalism into a Communist System of Government to improve the lives of the impoverished Soviet people.
WHAT FOLLOWS IS A SERIES OF HIGH-LEVEL DIPLOMATIC TWISTS AND TURNS THAT HAD ME THINKING I WAS READING SOMETHING OUT OF A LECARRE NOVEL LIKE “The Spy Who Came in from the Cold”. Steve’s True Life Adventures are well worth reading to observe the audacious accomplishments that one dedicated human is capable of if the reward is to upgrade a society. I highly recommend this book to anyone interested in a quality read. Five Stars!

I was already living in the United States when the Soviet Union collapsed, so when I returned to Moscow in 1995 as a correspondent for the Voice of America, I could not meet Gordy. Too bad, because your book brought so much of that time vividly back to life.
Your book is brilliant. The descriptions are accurate, reflecting both the beauty and the tragedy of that era. Yet, as a Russian American who lived through it, I must say that like many well-meaning but idealistic Westerners, you did not fully realize how extraordinarily brutal, cruel, and dangerous the Socialist system truly was. You later experienced this firsthand when, after all the good you had done in the USSR, your reward was a near-death experience.
You are unique, Steve, in many ways. Your attempt to change a seventy-year-old, rusted system almost single-handedly was a remarkable endeavor. Your idealistic vision and your optimistic desire to improve Russian lives did not materialize, but your courage and sincerity shine through every page.
Thank you for this unforgettable book. I thoroughly enjoyed it and wish you many years of health and happiness.
